Commissioner Mary Adams

Mary Adams is currently serving her first term on the Rochester Board of Education, chairing the Audit Committee and contributing as a member of the Excellence in Student Achievement Committee and the Community and Intergovernmental Relations Committee. She also convened and chaired the Ad hoc Committee on Common Core Standards Implementation, which issued a report and recommendations that were recognized throughout the state as a critical response to concerns about excessive standardization and its impact on quality education.

Commissioner Adams is the mother of nine year old Sarah and seven year old Maya, both scholars at the Dr. Walter Cooper Academy (RCSD School #10), and twenty-two year old Erin, a graduate of School of the Arts. Her husband, Ricardo Adams, is a community leader who volunteers and works with Rochester youth across a broad spectrum of ages and experiences. They live on Arnett Boulevard in the 19th Ward neighborhood.

Commissioner Adams has been a nurse in the University of Rochester’s HIV clinic for twenty years. She serves on national scientific and patient care committees, providing insight on how research protocols can most effectively be implemented in clinical care settings.

She earned her Master of Public Health and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees at the University of Rochester, and also holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Sociology from SUNY Cortland.

Always involved in working for racial and economic justice, Commissioner Adams has been active in organizing for fundamental improvements in public education. She is a member of the Flying Squirrel Community Space, where she prepares monthly Community Dinners to encourage fellowship among people from all walks of life. She is also active with the Southwest Common Council and 19th Ward neighborhood education groups.

In addition to board committee work, Commissioner Adams represents the school board on the Community Task Force for School Climate, which will significantly contribute to changing the way the district and individual schools develop safe and supportive environments for teaching and learning.
